Cystitis, or inflammation of the bladder, is usually caused by bacterial infection, irritants such as crystalline deposits in the urine. Cystitis is far more common in women than in men because infection frequently spreads upwards from the urethra, and the urethra in women is about 1.5 inches long, and 4 to 5 times longer in men.
