Summer’s
here and so are the dreaded fleas,
mozzies and other nigglies.
Many name-brand
insect repellents on the market today are little more than chemical
concoctions. Sunspirit has some great natural ideas and recipes
for deterring creepy crawlies from entering homes and if you or
a loved one gets bitten, some easy first aid advice.
Vapourising
essential oils or adding a few drops of oil to a bowl of steaming
water are simple ways to repel unwanted insects. Making up sprays
or adding neat essential oils to strips of cloth and hanging them
above your windows are also easy options.
Here
are some suggestions:

ANTS
Several drops
of Peppermint oil may be sprinkled strategically
along counters and walls to deter ants. It is very important to
test surface areas to make sure the oil will not destroy the finish.
Alternatively,
Sunspirit’s water miscible Pennyroyal oil may be used as a base
to make up a spray for areas where ants like to gather. Decant 25mL
into a Spritzer bottle and add 20 drops of Peppermint oil, Citronella
oil or Spearmint oil to give extra repelling power.

|
COCKROACHES
Add a few drops
of Citronella oil to cotton wool and place
in the back of cupboards.
An additional drop of Peppermint oil or Lemongrass oil can be added
for extra strength.
|
|
|
DUST
MITES
Mix 5 drops
of Eucalyptus oil with 1 drop of Sunspirit
Solubalizer and add to the rinse cycle of your washing machine.
Decant into
a household spray bottle - 100mL methylated spirits and 25mL Eucalyptus
oil. Add 75mL water and lightly spray under beds.
|
|
FLEAS
Pennyroyal
oil is specific against fleas and Sunspirit’s water miscible version
makes application easy and pet friendly.
For an animal
spray, decant 10mL into a spray bottle and add 50mL water. One to
two extra drops of Cedarwood oil, Citronella oil, Lemongrass oil
or Lavender oil may also be added. Lightly spray your animal (without
saturating and avoiding eyes) and its bedding areas.

|
|
FLIES
Place a handful
of dried cloves in a bowl and sprinkle with a few drops of Clove
oil and Lavender oil, Citronella oil or Peppermint oil. Recharge
with additional oil from time to time.
|
|
MICE
Add a few drops
of Peppermint oil, Eucalyptus oil or Spearmint
oil to cotton wool and place in the ceiling and anywhere mice might
enter the house.
|
|
|
MOTHS
/ SILVERFISH
Add a few drops
of Cedarwood oil to cotton wool and place
in wardrobes and drawers. An extra drop of Spearmint oil, Lavender
oil, Citronella oil or Peppermint oil can be added for good measure.
|
|
MOZZIES
Add a few drops
of Lemongrass oil or Citronella oil to
a bowl of steaming water or vapourise in a burner to keep mozzies
at a distance.
Add five drops of Lemongrass oil, Peppermint oil, Lavender oil or
Citronella oil to a ribbon and hang it from windows or doorways.

DISCLAIMER:
The above first aid claim applies to the use of Sunspirit Lavender
oil only. We have found that many products sold in the marketplace
and labelled as Lavender oil are not always from the true species
Lavandula angustifolia. Products that are not from this source are
often high in camphor and can be irritating to the skin rather than
comforting. Unfortunately in some cases, product labelling has proven
to be unreliable and untruthful. |
